Chicks have arrived!
What a special time of year, here at Pukekura / Taiaroa Head as new life arrives at the world’s only mainland breeding colony of royal albatross.
36 eggs were laid this season, but sadly a few didn’t survive. Now, 26 little fluffy albatross chicks are being protected by a single parent, while their other parent is out at sea working hard searching for food. Change over between parents happens regularly ever 2-4 days, as the chick requires frequent feeds to enable it to grow.
This provides great viewing on our guided tours during this time of year, a must visit while roaming the beautiful Otago Peninsula. We enable close views from our viewing areas to see these precious seabirds, and with a little luck you may get the chance to view a chick when its parent stands up.
Haven’t seen the live Royal Cam yet? this is a must do and gives you an insight into the life of a Royal Albatross from the comfort of your home.
