PRIMARY EDUCATION PROGRAMMES

The Education programmes at the Royal Albatross Centre are designed to inspire the next generation to protect our incredible New Zealand wildlife, culture and history.

Our Pirmary School education programmes cover a range of topics, all of which are central to us at Taiaroa Head / Pukekura, including; Plastic Pollution, Nature of Science, Identity and Heritage, Birds, Maori History, Conservation and Science.

PRIMARY EDUCATION PROGRAMMES


FLIGHT & FEATHERS

Birds are finely tuned flying machines, with the wing and flight style suited perfectly to the environment in which they live.

Topic: Science

Programme duration: 2 hours / Programme Cost: $4/per person

Age Focus: Years 4 – 8

Curriculum Area: Science (Level 2-4, LW – Achievement Objective 1-4)

SAVE OUR SEABIRDS

Royal Albatross are only one of the attractions of Taiaroa Head. Breeding colonies of Shags, Royal Spoonbills, Little Blue Penguins and Fur Seals are just a few of the highlights. Learn about the meaning and application of conservation status. Discuss current environmental issues impacting the seabirds and potential solutions to these problems.

Programme duration: 2 hours / Programme Cost: $4/per person

Curriculum Area: Science (Level 2-4, LW – Achievement Objectives 1-4)

TOROA AT TAIAROA

From fortification to conservation, students will look at how the use of Taiaroa Head has changed over time.

Topic: Identity & Heritage & History

Programme Duration: 2 hours / Progamme Cost: $4/person

Age Focus: Years 4-8

Curriculum Area: Science (Level 2-4, LW – Achievement Objectives 1-4)

LITTER FREE OCEANS

Investigate the impact of marine debris on the local wildlife and investigate the source of the problem as part of the programme.

Topic: Plastic Pollution

Programme Duration: 2 hours 15 mins / Programme Cost: $4/per person

Curriculum Area: Science, Nature of Science.

A IS FOR ALBATROSS, B IS FOR BIRD

Discover what makes a bird a bird and how the Royal Albatross is adapted for life at sea.

Topic: Birds

Programme duration: 1.5 hours / Programme Cost: $4/per person

Age Focus: Years 1-3
