Our Primary School education programmes cover a range of topics, all of which are central to us at Taiaroa Head/Pukekura, including; Plastic Pollution, Nature of Science, Identity and Heritage, Birds, Maori History, Conservation and Science.

Litter Free Oceans

Investigate the impact of marine debris on the local wildlife and investigate the source of the problem as part of the programme.
Topic: Plastic Pollution

Tracking Blue Penguins

Discover Kororā, the Little Blue Penguin, the world’s smallest penguin, in their natural habitat at Pukekura.
Topic: Nature of Science
Time: 2 hours
Age Focus: Years 4-8 (may be adapted for secondary)
Curriculum Area: Nature of Science (Levels 2-4, Investigating in Science, Participating and Contributing), Science (Level 2-4, Living World), Social Sciences (Level 3).

Pukekura Toroa

Save our Seabirds

Royal Albatross are only one of the attractions of Taiaroa Head. Breeding colonies of Shags, Royal Spoonbills, Little Blue Penguins and Fur Seals are just a few of the highlights. Learn about the meaning and application of conservation status. Discuss current environmental issues impacting the seabirds and potential solutions to these problems.
